REDD+ BENEFIT SHARING AND SAFEGUARDS WORKSHOP IN VANG VIENG

A knowledge sharing workshop on REDD+ Benefit Sharing and Social and Environmental Safeguards was held in Vang Vieng from 1-3 Feb 2017. The workshop was chaired by Mr. Somchay Sanontry, Deputy Director General of the Department of Forestry with a total of 38 participants from different institutions such as the National REDD+ Office, various REDD+ Technical Working Groups with inputs from Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and development partners supporting the REDD+ Readiness process in Lao PDR (FCPF, CliPAD, F-REDD). Houaphan’s Provincial REDD+ Action Plan (PRAP) has been discussed during the final consultation workshop in Xam Neua

On November 24th the Provincial REDD+ Office of Houaphan invited all province and district level stakeholders to Xam Neua’s cultural hall to present and discuss the Provincial REDD+ Action Plan (PRAP). Next step to better forest management on the local level

First Village Forest Management Agreement signed in Houaphan province In the past, the government of Laos only gave limited financial support to Village Forest Management in the uplands of Laos. But with the emergence of REDD+ and increased opportunities for performance-based payments for sustainable forest management, the situation is changing. Now the first Village Forest Management Agreement has been signed. Good news for REDD+ in Laos

Mid-October, the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) Carbon Fund under the World Bank has accepted Laos’ Emission Reduction Program Idea Note (ER-PIN) in its thirteen’s meeting in Brussels. The acceptance paves the way for REDD+ performance-based payments. The GIZ project CliPAD (Climate Protection through Avoided Deforestation) together with JICA, SUFORD-SU and FAO supported the Department of Forest Resource Management (DFRM) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) as well as the Department of Forestry (DoF) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) intensively in the preparation during the last six month.
